BUILDING DIGITAL CERAMICS

The exhibition Building Digital Ceramics shows set of elements developed in the Advanced Ceramics R&D Lab between 2016 and 2018 with the aim of exploring the integration of computational tools and additive manufacturing processes in the design and production of ceramic architectural components.
Based in the Design Institute of Guimarães, the Advanced Ceramics R&D Lab has the support of the School of Architecture of the University of Minho and is part of the research themes of the research unit Lab2PT – Laboratory of Landscape, Heritage and Territory. The exhibition presents a selection of test pieces that served as the basis for: inferring the optimal plasticity degree of the ceramic paste for 3D printing; evaluating the formal constraints inherent in the layer-by-layer extrusion process; exploiting of the use of composite materials in 3d printing processes. It also includes a set of prototypes that demonstrate the potential of the architectural application of ceramic components produced by additive manufacturing.

The results of the research that are now being presented constitute a vehicle for valuing and applying knowledge in an emerging area that involves projects and multidisciplinary teams and that has very positive reflexes in teaching.
